ABOUT THE PROJECT
Aware that the original library was a project of SC’s Robert Mills, designer of the Washington Monument and other national landmarks, the University approached this renovation carefully. The award-winning result grew out of an imaginary trip into Mills’ mind to determine what his initial design intentions were.

Two construction projects grew out of a successful master plan process. One was the Casey Center state-of-the-art lecture hall with award-winning stain glass designed by Jim Piercey, and the other was the Smith Family Village residential complex that naturally provides safety and expandability by its configuration and plan.

The geometric resolution of the sanctuary’s street orientation played against the rest of the facility’s skewed orientation led to a design motif that carried out into window layouts, cross design, and furniture details.

Lighting and acoustical improvements accompany the new organ installation. Imagine the architect’s joy to read on social media an unsolicited concert-goer’s comments about the space’s remarkable acoustics! A clever ceiling “window” also opened up a previously unavailable view of remarkable stained glass.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Projects resulting from a successful master plan included sanctuary renovation (beautiful clapboard country church) and the additions to and renovations of the education building (incompatible flat-roofed brick structure). A simple clapboard addition, which recalls the sanctuary’s form, was added in two places to the brick structure, drawing the campus into a cohesive whole.
